up-side-down - umgekehrt

Everyone who watches TV knows this: The season for certain soaps/series start in September/ October and last until like May/June. Right? Correct. NOW, in Australia, just like the weather and the fact I am now on the other side of the world, things are upside down!

Here, not only that there are Christmas trees (fake of course) being put up at 30 degrees celsius (possibly around 90F?) and in the sun, no the soaps/series are going into their summer break as well - in November! Soon, the kids will have six weeks of summer holidays and it is Christmas.

It is still a little blurry for me to imagine Christmas without snow and cold or at least me cursing the world for the cold. I have to admit I envy those who are expecting snow soon and the cold winternights with hot chocolate, the fire places (for those who have them) and even the rain. The Christmas market (to all those living in Birmingham: Go and have a "Feuerzangenbowle" if you have not had that with me in the past and thank me later :) ) and my alltime favourite: Waffles with Nutella. Yes, I can have that any day doing that myself, but it is not the same, it is not the Christmas season!! Plus, pre-Christmas season in the UK meant for me: knowing the German market will be there soon and I can indulge in German food without feeling that I am stuffing my face. After all; it is not like there is a German Christmas Market all yearound, right?

I think I miss those things. Mom asked if I wanted my usual pre-Christmas-German-Chocolate-Gingerbread-Cookies parcel. I have to say, usually I am so up for that and cannot wait for the first week in December knowing this parcel will arrive and the first Advent is celebrated with typical Christmas cookies, maybe some mulled wine and Christmas songs, but thinking about having that in 30degrees heat? I decided it would not be a good idea, also because the parcel would possibly not survive the sending and the heat would melt everything inside anyways. Thanks Mom, I know you mean well, maybe I can have two parcels next year :) ?

It sounds weird; Christmas trees in the heat - believe me it is!!!

Have a great week everyone!

Dad - du weisst was das heisst! :)

Spiders and other creatures - Spinnen und andere Kreaturen

I forgot to mention: I have seen one of the biggest spiders in my life. Apparently it was not that big, but to me it was. I have no idea what it was called and do not have a picture of it either, as it had to leave my bedroom. Here is a little discription though: As large as my hand, light brown with tiny, well not so tiny, hairs and it is green inside (do not ask how I know that!!!).Disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday we had something really cute happening at the house though: Three possums, one mother with the baby and another one came to the back of the house for food. The back door was open (we thought we had it closed) and we were watching TV. Suddenly we hear this noise as if the cat was in the trash. So we told the "cat" off and it stopped for a few minutes. Then it started again, so I got up and went to take a look. And something that did not look like the cat ran out the back door. When I went out there was the possum sitting on the porch looking at us like it was waiting for food. And then it chased me on the porch!!! It was so cute! I did touch it and it is very fluffy!!!

Emma and James went home to England yesterday as  well, so we met up for coffee to say good bye.

second roatrip and no better - Zweiter Anlauf und nicht besser

After a week in town which went a little so and so, we went onto our second road trip last week to Coffs Harbour up by the Golden Coast. It took seven hours to drive up there. The area was beautiful, the caravan park much better than the last one.

But it was raining again for the whole week. We tried to make the most of it, at least it was not as cold as it was in Goulburn. Unfortunately for me the week was not as fruitful as I had hoped and this basically brings me to the conclusion that maybe I am not a sales person. I might be good if I had more time for practising, but it does not help me when I am not making any money. So, back now in Sydney and I am looking for a new job. Fruit picking sounds more and more interesting... We shall see what happens.

who I met at the doors - wen ich an der Tuer traf

A bad start with good intentions - Ein schlechter Start mit gutem Hintergrund

Sara M.- Swedish - Schwedin
Well well, I had a couple of days training and then went went onto the little road trip. It was cold, it rained a lot and people were crumpy... Apart from that it was a real learning lesson. Like what not to forget when you go to areas you do not know... Lots of things happened at the same time. I was driving which was much better than I thought remembering my little driving experience in the UK (and the speeding ticket).

Antony - Autralia, Emma & James - England
S.T. - Holland

The roads are much wider than in the UK which makes it easier and they do love their roundabouts :). Of course they do not know that driving fast means faster than 100km/h (about 75miles) but hey you cannot have everything right? We only had one car though and were 11 people, so basically I drove three times twice a day to get everyone back and forth to their turfs. Made me really perfect my driving in Oz.

It is raining - Es regnet
Monday it was cold and raining most of the day and therefore the mood of some people was really below the belt hence we did not find a lot of people, very few actually to commit themselves to HRI. So frustration hit on day one and basically continued until the end. No matter how nice the neighbourhood seemed it jus was not working out for us last week. Even the office said they never had a road trip like that.

"lovely" Goulburn - "tolles" Goulburn
Then on Wednesday, as if the week could not get any worse, our Team leader (Sara H.) did something to her back and was left on the side of the road until some nice people found her and brought her to a hospital. As the other leader did not have any reception on her phone the husband of a nurse was sent to find her and bring her to the hospital as well. Of course non of us knew until the evening due to the lack of reception. It was a bad day... The teamleader Sara stayed in the hospital until Saturday when we picked her up and drove back to Sydney.

But then her pain was so bad (and she could not move) that we took her to the hospital in Sydney where they kept her until 2am and then send her home under the supervision of her friends.

our campers/unsere Unterkunft
That was our week. Now I am giving it a try this week and so far have not managed a lot, but the key is to stay positive. I really want this to work because it is for such a good cause and I like the talking to people. it just frustrates me when you have wealthy people who do not want to give. what do you do with all that money??? Anyways we are staying positive!!!

a perfectly good car - ein tolles Auto

A blue church - eine blaue Kirche

Gordon - the Irish - der Ire

Roadtrip with work - Autoreise mit Kollegen

So, I survived the endless talks at work with introduction etc. and have had my first two days in the field. I went with an English girl, Emma and my team leader Sara, she is Swedish (seems the swedish are all working at Integral). Anyways, we were basically just watching was Sara was doing mainly but also could chip in with a few words. I feel every good about this and hope it works out. There will be an evaluation on day 6, which should be next Friday, but since we are going on a road trip tomorrow I won't be there.

Roadtrip, yes. Well basically we try to reach as many people as we can to commit to the Heart Research Institute for awareness and funding, so every other week the groups go on roadtrips to the countryside. It is good for me because it will be hard core training for me (so I have been told) and also it is apparently a good way of making a living. We leave tomorrow afternoon and I have no idea where we are going yet. Sara has all the info. What I do know is that I will be driving. I am one of the oldest people in the company (the director is 25years old - go figure!) and hence we can get a car cheaper as well. It gives me the opportunity as well to test the Australian Roads. it is kinda cute because sometimes I feel like I am watching all these kids running around.

I am very excited about this week and cannot wait to go!!! I was able to commit one person per day over the past two days of work and I am very happy about that. Lots of people actuall already give money to charity which is great, there are just so many out there! But people in sydney seem to be less keen on helping or are too busy etc.etc. therefore we go further out. If next week works well it would also mean for me that I can start looking for a room in the city which would be closer to work and great for me. A few people that started with me are also thinking about that and there might be someone I can share an apartment with wich woould be good. I am forever grateful for Jana for having me here with her, but next week is the first week she and Aaron will have the house for themselves since I got here five weeks ago. I am already packed (I LOVE my vacuum bags, best buy EVER!) and ready to go tomorrow.

This means I am off the radar for a week and hopefully will have some pictures to show when I am back next week. Have a great week everyone!!!!

PS: if anyone is interested in the agent I am working for, you are more than welcome to have a look:

*****************************************************************
